Vicky (Victor Weisz)
(1913-1966)
Weisz was a political caricaturist, born
in Berlin, of Hungarian Jewish extraction, Vicky came and settled in England in
1935 and worked successfully on the News Chronicle, Daily Mirror
and Evening Standard, maintaining a fiercly independent stance whatever
the political hue of his employer and building a reputation as an incisive
commentator on political events. A socialist himself, one of his most enduring
creations was 'Supermac', a caricature of Macmillan intended ironically, but
often interpreted in Macmillan's favour. Vicky is represented in many major
collections, with a number of his works in London's National Portrait Gallery.
